La Graciosa Marine Reserve

Isla Graciosa

Last week I visited la Graciosa Island , located in the Chinijo Archipelago in the northern part of the Canary Islands. This island is a unique nature reserve hosting a huge variety of marine wildlife and rare species. It is not only a Nature Reserve, but also a Marine Reserve and part of the Biosphere Reserves of Lanzarote.

In fact, I had the opportunity to witness all this marine wildlife during several dives. Together with Diving Center “Centro de Buceo La Graciosa” we went out to look for Angel Sharks in several diving sites around the island, including the “insider” spot : shark reef.

Javier Bermúdez, the director of the only diving center on the island, showed me the different places where we could find Angel Sharks and where they are frequently seen.

Interestingly, the way the sharks behave here and hide in the sand is completely different to what i have been observing in Gran Canaria.

We are expecting to work closely with the people from la Graciosa to find out more about the seasonality and behaviour of the sharks in this part of the Canary Islands.

Hopefully our collaboration with Centro Buceo La Graciosa will generate a lot of interesting data in the future.

Thank you Javier and the rest of the team for taking care of us!
